Backyard

Dir. Árni Sveinsson | 2010 | 73 min

A mini-festival in a Reykjavík musician's backyard celebrates the city's thriving underground scene.

Reykjavík musician Árni Rúnar had the idea of gathering a few bands together in his backyard to do some live recording. The idea evolved into a mini-music festival, and the mini-music festival evolved into this utterly charming portrait of the Icelandic capital's thriving indie music scene. While the rest of the city is celebrating the annual Reykjavík culture night, Árni fills his little shack of a studio with equipment, warns/invites his neighbors, prays for good weather, and feeds pizza and cupcakes to a growing crowd of friends, tourists, and passers-by as the musical day evolves from the dreamy folk-pop of múm and Sin Fang Bous to the delirious twilight disco of Retro Stefson and FM Belfast. While showcasing some of the coolest bands in Reykjavík, Backyard captures the DIY attitude and wry humor that have made the city's tight-knit underground scene so artistically strong.

Set list: Born to Be Free (Borko) • Stay By You (Hjaltalín) • Clangour (Sin Fang Bous) • Kate Bush (Reykjavík!) • If I Were a Fish (múm) • Papa Paulo III (Retro Stefson) • Underwear (FM Belfast)
