Devo Live 1980

Dir. Joe Reis | 2005 | 75 min

NEW LOWER PRICE! Akron's legendary spudboys in their prime in this full-length concert featuring incredible rare footage and 20 devolutionary classics, including "Whip It," "Girl U Want," "Satisfaction," and "Jocko Homo."

"This lone artifact offers indisputable evidence that in 1980 Devo had reached a turning point. We were no longer just art monsters, we were mainstream performers too," Devo bassist Gerald Casale said of this concert film capturing the cult New Wave conceptualists on the cusp of breakout stardom. Opening with "Whip It" - released as a single just four days before this August 17, 1980 show in Petaluma, California - Devo runs through a set of machine-tooled classics (and costumes) from their first three albums, culminating with corporate mascot Booji Boy's heartbreaking solo turn on "Tunnel of Life" (after a video showing him getting his head crushed by a steam press). Subcultural history as it happened.

Set list: Whip It • Snowball • It's Not Right • Girl U Want • Planet Earth • S.I.B. (Swelling Itching Brain) • Secret Agent Man • Pink Pussycat • Blockhead • (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction • Uncontrollable Urge • Mongoloid • Be Stiff • Gates of Steel • Freedom of Choice • Jocko Homo • Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA • Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy • Come Back Jonee • Tunnel of Life
