Hardcore Devo Live!

Dir. Keirda Bahruth | 2014 | 84 min

Devo dusts off oddities, rarities, and experiments from their early days in this one-of-a-kind concert film.

Before they were a cult band championed by David Bowie and Iggy Pop, before hits like “Whip It” and "Girl U Want" made them unlikely mass-media darlings, Devo labored in the basements and garages of Akron, Ohio, turning their revolutionary theory of de-evolution into raw, unfiltered music the group called “Hardcore Devo." In the summer of 2014, the band did 10 shows performing these seminal pre-fame songs, created between 1974 and 1977 and for the most part rarely played since. Kinetically shot by award-winning documentary filmmaker Keirda Bahruth (Bob and the Monster) at the Oakland's Fox Theater and intercut with interviews with Gerald Casale, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Bob Mothersbaugh, Hardcore Devo Live! captures these groundbreaking artists playing the songs that started it all - and paying tribute to their fallen comrade, Bob Casale, who died only a few months before the tour.
