The Ghost of Piramida

Dir. Andreas Koefoed | 2012 | 58 min

Danish electro-indie band Efterklang goes on a sonic treasure hunt in an evocative Russian ghost town.

For their fourth and most ambitious album, Danish indie trio Efterklang went on an audio adventure to Piramida, a deserted former Soviet mining colony on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, far above the Arctic Circle. Accompanied by their taciturn and not visibly impressed Russian guard - on hand to protect them from polar bears - the group goes on a sonic treasure hunt in the ghost town's abandoned buildings while the narrator, a former resident called Alexander, recalls a bygone era when Piramida flourished and the Russian miners and their families enjoyed the social pleasures of a Soviet parallel society far from the brutal reality of their homeland. Accompanying Efterklang on their nine-day journey, director Andreas Koefoed captured the post-apocalyptic emptiness of the town and the otherworldly beauty of its surroundings as the band collected hundreds of sound recordings that would shape their 2012 album Piramida, music from which accompanies this enchanting tale of a community's rise and fall.
